Why Your Google Ads Aren’t Converting

Traffic is up, spend is up, and leads are flat. Here's where that budget is actually going.

The metrics that look fine are hiding the ones that don’t

Traffic is up. Spend is up. Impressions are climbing on every dashboard you check. And yet the phone isn’t ringing any more than it was three months ago. This is the single most common complaint we hear from businesses running their own Google Ads accounts — and it’s almost never a budget problem.

It’s a targeting and structure problem, and it usually traces back to the same handful of mistakes.

Broad match is quietly burning your budget

Broad match keywords are the easiest way to spend a budget fast and the hardest way to spend it well. Left unchecked, they pull in searches that are only loosely related to what you actually sell — which explains rising impressions and clicks alongside flat conversions.

A tighter match-type strategy, backed by a search-term report you actually review weekly, is usually the fastest lever to pull.

Your landing page is doing half the job

An ad can be perfectly targeted and still convert poorly if it sends traffic to a generic homepage instead of a page built around the exact offer in the ad. Message match — the ad copy and the landing page saying the same thing, in the same order — is one of the most under-used conversion levers in paid search.

What we’d check first

Before touching budget, we pull the search-term report, check match types, and map every ad group to its own landing page. In most accounts, that alone accounts for the majority of wasted spend — no extra budget required, just less of it going to the wrong searches.
